Client matrix for rea-agents 6.4.0
Setup in [email protected] can register REA’s local stdio MCP server with 17 client IDs.
The table matches docs/installation.md at tag rea-agents-6.4.0.
Skill-directory pitfalls stay on MCP clients and skill paths.
Pin and engines
Node for this package: ^22.19.0 || ^24.11.0 || >=26.0.0. Registry id: io.github.morluto/rea. The registry entry launches the same npm package with npx and the mcp command. It is not a second distribution.
npx -y [email protected] setup
npx -y [email protected] doctor --client codex --json
npx -y [email protected] doctor --skill --json rea setup offers these agents in a multi-select. Existing REA registrations start selected. Newly detected clients stay available but unselected: detection is context, not permission to write a new registration.
Explicit --client skips the question. Approve the dry-run before --yes. Restart the client afterward. Persistent registrations pin the package version that performed setup.
npx skills add morluto/rea --skill reverse-engineer-anything installs instructions only. It does not register MCP and it does not install Ghidra, JEB, IDA, or Hopper.
Supported --client values
Pi, Hermes, and Qwen Code are in this npm release. The 6.4.0 release notes (2026-10-11) list their setup as added
(#1376,
#1403,
#1415).
A paragraph in the same tag’s install doc was written while npm latest was still 6.3.0 and said those three IDs were absent from that tarball. Do not apply the 6.3.0 sentence to a @6.4.0 pin.
A later note on main (not a newer npm version) says the published 6.4.0 package accepted dry-run plans for these 17 IDs, including Qwen Code, Pi, and Hermes. Confirm on your machine with doctor.
| Client | --client | 6.4.0 wiring |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | claude_code | Setup writes MCP plus the bundled skill. Confirm the skill landed where this client loads it. |
| Claude Desktop | claude_desktop | Follow the setup plan, then restart the desktop app. |
| Codex | codex | Unset or empty CODEX_HOME means ~/.codex. |
| Cursor | cursor | IDE MCP entry. Reconnect after setup so the tool list refreshes. |
| Gemini CLI | gemini_cli | Honors a nonempty GEMINI_CLI_HOME. Untrusted workspace settings do not replace the user entry. |
| Windsurf | windsurf | IDE MCP entry. Reconnect after setup. |
| Devin | devin | On non-Windows, config follows XDG_CONFIG_HOME for devin/mcp_config.json. |
| OpenCode | opencode | 6.4.0 setup honors OPENCODE_CONFIG_DIR. npm 6.3.0 did not. |
| Antigravity | antigravity | Select it in setup or pass --client antigravity. |
| GitHub Copilot CLI | copilot_cli | Full schemas can block gpt-4.1 metadata (#1554). Compact profile is the documented workaround. |
| Command Code | commandcode | Setup client since 4.1.0. Still confirm with doctor on 6.4.0. |
| Qwen Code | qwen_code | Added in 6.4.0. User settings: ~/.qwen/settings.json, or $QWEN_HOME/settings.json. |
| VS Code | vscode | Select it in setup or pass --client vscode, then reload the window. |
| Grok Build | grok_build | [mcp_servers.rea] in $GROK_HOME/config.toml, or ~/.grok/config.toml. |
| OMP | omp | User mcp.json under ~/.omp/agent, or the profile from OMP_PROFILE / PI_PROFILE. |
| Pi | pi | Added in 6.4.0. Strict JSON at ~/.pi/agent/mcp.json, or PI_CODING_AGENT_DIR. |
| Hermes | hermes | Added in 6.4.0. mcp_servers.rea in config.yaml under HERMES_HOME; active profile is followed. |
Verify one client
Substitute the ID from the table. Inspect before you write. The commands below use Pi; Hermes is hermes, Qwen Code is qwen_code, Copilot CLI is copilot_cli.
npx -y [email protected] setup --client pi --dry-run --json
npx -y [email protected] setup --client pi --yes --json
npx -y [email protected] doctor --client pi --json - Pi reads
mcp.jsonas strict JSON. Comments, trailing commas, a byte-order mark, or an empty file are invalid. Setup reports them instead of rewriting the file. Repair to plain JSON, then rerun. FollowPI_CODING_AGENT_DIRwhen it is set. Reload an existing Pi session after out-of-band edits. A project.pi/mcp.jsoncan hide the user entry. - Qwen Code:
mcpServers.reain~/.qwen/settings.json, or$QWEN_HOME/settings.json. Personal skills are discovered under~/.agents/skills. - Hermes:
mcp_servers.reainconfig.yaml, resolved fromHERMES_HOMEor the platform default (%LOCALAPPDATA%\hermeson Windows,~/.hermeselsewhere), includingHERMES_DATA_DIR_SUFFIX. Setup followsactive_profile. An invalid sticky profile is reported; it is not silently written into the default home. - OMP: one registration per profile. Run setup under each
OMP_PROFILEorPI_PROFILEthat should load REA.disabledServershidesrea; setup removes that name from the file it edits. - OpenCode on 6.4.0 honors
OPENCODE_CONFIG_DIR. npm 6.3.0 did not.
Copilot CLI and schema size
For GitHub Copilot CLI 1.0.95, gpt-4.1 model metadata can block ordinary chat with REA’s full input-schema profile before a model request is sent (compaction_static_context_blocked, #1554).
The compact profile passed native chat and analysis with the full tool inventory on Linux in upstream’s loopback fixture. After setup, add this to the env object of mcpServers.rea in Copilot’s mcp-config.json, keep the other settings, and restart:
"REA_MCP_INPUT_SCHEMA_PROFILE": "compact" Compact advertisements can drop nested schema constraints. REA still validates canonical inputs. The same environment variable is the 6.4.0 switch for other size-capped hosts (Kimi / Moonshot). It is not a license to send a different tool than the one you named.
Grok Bot is not one of the 17 files
Grok Bot (grok_bot) is described in the 6.4.0 install doc as a manual hosted connector. Setup does not call the account connector API and does not treat ~/.grokbot as aligned.
Ask the Grok Bot chat to add a custom MCP server named rea that runs on the Bot’s computer: npx -y [email protected] mcp.
Do not put credentials in that command. rea doctor --client grok_bot reports the manual step. rea uninstall does not remove the account connector.
Grok Build (grok_build) is different: it is a row in the table and uses local config.toml.
Pending the next npm release after 6.4.0
Factory Droid (droid) and DeepSeek Harness (dsh) are on main only until a release after 6.4.0.
Do not list them as clients of [email protected]. setup --client dsh against this pin reports an unsupported client.
Qoder, Trae, and ZCode appear in later main docs the same way: not in the 6.4.0 table, so not in this matrix.
